With a summer holiday on the horizon and a dental conference in Florence coming up, I’ve been thinking more than usual about bright, confident smiles; especially in places like Italy, where smile confidence and style seem to go hand in hand.
It’s also a timely reminder of how many patients start thinking about their own teeth at this time of year, whether it’s weddings, holidays, or simply wanting to feel a bit more confident in photographs.
At home, I also see this through a slightly different lens. I have two teenagers: one of whom already talks about dentistry as a future career, particularly orthodontics (she likes everything “in order,” which probably explains a lot). It’s interesting to see how early confidence around smiles starts to matter.
Summer, smiles and confidence
Summer tends to be a season of milestones and social occasions. For many people, it’s also a time when concerns about tooth colour or alignment become more noticeable.
Feeling confident about your smile can make a real difference in how freely you engage in those moments, whether in photos or simply day-to-day conversation. For many people, restoring confidence in their smile can involve a range of treatments; from straightening teeth to improving colour or replacing missing teeth, particularly at this time of year when smiles are more on display.
This is where clear aligner systems like Invisalign or Angel have been game-changing, going undetected when people are often at their most self-conscious. Comfortable and discreet, seeing the transformative difference they can make is remarkable for patients of all ages.
Just a note to remember appropriate oral care routine and products (like pulse cleaners) during this period, protecting not just teeth and gums, but keeping the retainer clean and hygienic, too. https://www.instagram.com/p/DXvyWGUIzzU/
Here at Crossbank Dental Care, we see patients from across Cumbria considering these treatments ahead of summer events and holidays.
A quick word about teeth straightening
For patients of all ages, modern orthodontic treatment has changed significantly in recent years.
Comfortable, discreet systems such as clear aligners have made treatment far less visible than traditional braces, and follow-on retention remains an essential part of protecting long-term results.
This stage is often underestimated; retainers help maintain tooth position while surrounding bone and soft tissues stabilise. Consistency here is key to preserving the result.
Thinking about teeth whitening?
It’s also the time of year when we see a rise in interest in teeth whitening and, unfortunately, an increase in unregulated or unsafe approaches.
DON’T:
Use unregulated beauty salons for whitening treatments
Buy unprescribed online bleaching kits
Follow abrasive DIY trends such as activated charcoal or baking soda, which may damage enamel over time
DO:
Seek a professional dental assessment first
Ensure whitening is tailored to your teeth and gums
Follow a clinically supervised treatment plan
Maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing after food and drink
Use desensitising toothpaste if sensitivity occurs
If you're considering teeth whitening this summer, you may have some questions about safety, suitability, cost and how long results last. I've answered some of the questions we're most commonly asked in detail at the end of my blog.
At Crossbank Dental Care, all whitening treatment is provided following a clinical assessment to ensure suitability and safety. The process begins with an assessment to ensure teeth and gums are healthy and suitable for whitening.
We then use digital scanning technology to create a precise model of your teeth which is a comfortable, non-invasive process without traditional "gunky" impressions.
From this, a custom-made whitening tray is produced for use with clinically approved whitening gel at home.
Most patients use the trays daily (usually for a short period each day or overnight, depending on the treatment plan) with results developing over the course of treatment.
A follow-up review is arranged to check progress and ensure everything is progressing as expected.
