Ways to Find Calm in the Face of Stress

Ways to Find Calm in the Face of Stress

by Bex Cooper, Director

If the thought of visiting the dentist makes your stomach tighten, you are far from alone.

For many people, even booking an appointment can feel overwhelming.

Did you know that April is International Stress Awareness Month? It’s easy for stress to feel like the “new normal”, so this is a timely reminder to pause and consider the pressures we all carry in our busy lives, whether work, family, health, or simply the pace of modern living. www.stress.org.uk/stress-awareness-month-2026

Sadly, more than half of adults feel some level of anxiety about visiting the dentist, and for many, it goes far beyond mild nerves. At Crossbank Dental Care, we are dedicated to understanding and reducing dental anxiety. So during a month dedicated to reducing stress, it feels only right to talk about how we are working every day to make dental care feel calmer, gentler and more supportive for everyone who walks through our doors.

There’s a reason ‘Care’ is in our name

When Neil founded Crossbank Dental Care 25 years ago, he did so with a very clear vision: that we are not “just” treating teeth, we are caring for people, each one as an individual.

From the moment you arrive, you are greeted by name. There’s no sense of being hurried. If you need time to talk, we make time. If you need pauses during treatment, we listen. Everything is designed to reduce stress, not add to it.

Neil’s personal commitment to anxious patients goes even further. For patients with more severe anxiety, Neil has undertaken additional training through the Dental Phobia Scheme, designed specifically to support those who may have avoided care for many years. www.dentalphobia.co.uk

A calmer experience with sedation

For some patients, reassurance, understanding and gentle care are enough to transform their experience. Those with higher levels of anxiety may benefit from safe and effective dental sedation. Not a ‘knock-out’ anaesthetic, sedation allows you to feel deeply relaxed throughout your treatment. Many patients tell us it feels like time simply passes by in comfort and ease.

Consistent customer feedback collected impartially over the last three years confirms that an overwhelming 97.5% who have used Crossbank Dental Care's sedation assistance would recommend it, with many patients telling us they feel relaxed throughout and often have little or no memory of the procedure.

We often see patients who tell us they have avoided the dentist for years because of fear or past difficult experiences.

One patient shared that they had been “afraid of the dentist for many years” before finally coming to us. With a calm, step-by-step approach and supportive care throughout their treatment, they described their experience as “a very positive experience… absolutely pain free and beyond expectations.”

Moments like this are why we do what we do; helping people move from fear to calm, one visit at a time.

Investing in better

We couldn’t do what we do without our fantastic, dedicated team, and investment in our Crossbank Dental Care team is central to our wraparound service.

I’m delighted to share that three of our valued clinicians, Helen, Linda & Liz, have recently achieved their Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry. This is a significant accomplishment and reflects their dedication to delivering the very highest standards of care.

Simple ways to reduce dental anxiety

  • Let us know how you’re feeling before your visit

  • Bring headphones or music you enjoy

  • Ask for breaks at any time

  • Start with a conversation, not treatment

Let’s all turn stress into smiles

Stress Awareness Month is a reminder that small changes can make a big difference. Sometimes, that change starts with choosing a place where you feel genuinely listened to and supported. Maybe we all pause for a moment to be kind to ourselves and those around us: take a breath, have a cup of tea, ask for help, or simply pick up the phone to a friend.

If you’ve been putting things off, you don’t have to commit to treatment. You can simply start with a conversation. Our team is always happy to listen and help you explore your options at your own pace.

If visiting the dentist has ever felt like something to worry about, you are not alone, and you are always welcome at Crossbank Dental Care.

Wishing you a peaceful, positive April,

Bex x
