From childhood calling to community care: My 25-year journey at Crossbank Dental Care

I have wanted to be a dentist since I was 10 years old. There was never a plan B. No alternative career quietly waiting in the wings. From childhood, I knew I wanted to spend my life caring for people in this practical, very human way by easing pain, technically solving problems and restoring confidence, helping others feel more at home in themselves.
Today, after 25 years as Principal of Crossbank Dental Care here in Kendal, that calling feels just as strong as it did on day one.
Our practice sits inside something bigger than dentistry. It sits inside our community; inside school runs and market days, inside conversations on Highgate, inside families who have lived here for generations and those who have just arrived. In uncertain times, people yearn for reassurance, for kindness, for somewhere that feels steady. I believe a dental practice can be part of that steadiness.
At Crossbank Dental Care, we are not simply here to fix teeth. We are here to care for people and for the place we love to call home.
That is why our work reaches beyond the surgery. Through our out-reach "Tooth Fairy" programme we help local children meet dentistry with curiosity rather than fear. Through our "Implant a Tree initiative" with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, every implant treatment contributes to restoring the landscape that surrounds us. As a Gold Unity Partner of the Bridge2Aid charity, our commitment to dentistry extends far beyond Kendal.
Every day we open our doors carries a certain weight and a certain privilege. We care for the parent introducing their child to brushing for the first time. For the couple preparing for wedding photographs. For the business owner who wants to speak with renewed confidence. For the older member of our community who simply wishes to eat comfortably again.
The true result is never "just" a successful procedure.
It is the restored smile.
The eased anxiety.
The quiet return of self-belief.
Our values define us more than any piece of equipment or clinical technique ever could.
We believe in respect: for your time, your concerns and your individuality.
We believe in integrity: doing what we say we will do, even when it is inconvenient.
We believe in empathy: understanding that walking into a dental practice can feel daunting, and meeting that feeling with patience and calm.
We believe in accountability: taking responsibility, learning and continually striving to improve.
And we believe in community: because healthcare belongs to everyone.
We are honoured to serve Kendal and the wider Cumbria community. Many of our team have deep local roots. They care for people they see in the supermarket, on the school run and out on the fells at the weekend. That connection shapes the way we work. When we put on our uniform, we carry the trust of our neighbours and friends; and that is never taken lightly. It shapes every decision we make.
Of course, we invest in training, technology and continual development so that we can provide modern, high-quality dentistry. But for us, success is measured in quieter ways: in patients who feel genuinely heard and whose lives we change with the power of their smile; in children who grow up without dental fear; in a team that takes pride in the care and respect they show each other; and in the knowledge that our work contributes positively to the world beyond our doors.
Equality, dignity and kindness are not optional extras, they are the foundation of who we are. Every person who walks through our doors should feel welcome, safe and valued.
Kendal is a remarkable place. Resilient. Close-knit. Generous in spirit. It is an honour to serve this town and the communities around it.
When you choose Crossbank Dental Care, you are not simply choosing a dental appointment. You are placing your trust in a team committed to doing the right thing: clinically, ethically and personally.
This practice belongs to its community. We are ambitious for excellence, but measured by more than outcomes alone. We want to succeed in a way that makes Kendal proud.
This is who we are.
This is what we stand for.

Dr Neil Cooper
Principal implant dental surgeon and director.
